Phil Rice

Early Days

Phil’s journey into the industry began at the very foundation of the business. He started his career within stairlift manufacturing, working directly on the production line assembling equipment. This early, hands-on experience provided a detailed understanding of how lifting systems are built, how they function in real-world conditions, and what is required to ensure long-term reliability. It is a level of practical knowledge that continues to underpin his approach to every project undertaken by Anglian Lifts today.

Over time, Phil progressed through the industry, gaining experience across multiple disciplines including manufacturing operations, technical delivery, and business management. His career development was built on real, practical experience rather than theory, allowing him to develop a well-rounded understanding of both the technical and commercial aspects of the sector.

This progression ultimately led to senior leadership roles within the lift manufacturing industry, including serving as President of MediTek Incorporated in the United States. In this role, Phil was responsible for overseeing operations within an international market, gaining valuable experience in business leadership, distribution, and the delivery of lifting solutions across a broader commercial landscape. This international exposure further strengthened his understanding of the industry, providing insight into different markets, standards, and approaches to product delivery.

In addition to his time in the United States, Phil also held a Managing Director position within a lift manufacturing organisation in the UK, where he was responsible for overseeing operations, managing teams, and contributing to the strategic direction of the business. These combined leadership roles provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the industry from both a manufacturing and operational perspective.

Despite reaching senior leadership level within the manufacturing environment, Phil chose to step away from that side of the industry in order to return to a more hands-on, project-led approach. He recognised that there was an opportunity to deliver something different—an approach focused not on simply supplying products, but on delivering complete, well-considered lift solutions tailored to each individual project.

This vision led to the creation of Anglian Lifts Ltd.

From the outset, the company was built around a clear and uncompromising principle: lift solutions should be delivered by engineers, not salespeople. This philosophy remains at the core of the business today and is reflected in every stage of the process—from initial consultation and design through to installation and long-term support.

Phil works closely with homeowners, architects, and developers, particularly within high-end residential environments where attention to detail is critical. In these types of properties, a lift is rarely a simple addition; it is often a permanent architectural element that must be carefully integrated into the design of the home. Whether the project involves a contemporary new-build, a listed property, or a complex retrofit, each installation requires careful planning, technical understanding, and precise execution.

Phil’s approach is to ensure that every lift is not only technically correct, but also fully aligned with the overall vision of the property. This includes early-stage collaboration with architects and builders, consideration of structural and spatial requirements, and a focus on achieving a finished result that complements both the function and aesthetics of the space.

Under Phil’s leadership, Anglian Lifts has developed a strong reputation for delivering high-quality installations across the UK. The company is known for its engineering-led approach, its ability to manage complex projects, and its commitment to maintaining control throughout the entire project lifecycle. By taking responsibility from start to finish, Anglian Lifts ensures consistency, accountability, and a higher standard of delivery on every project.

The British Healthcare Trades Association

In addition to his work at Anglian Lifts, Phil served as a Board Director of the British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) for six years, completing the maximum two three-year terms permitted. During this time, he contributed to the development and promotion of best practice within the mobility and accessibility sector. Although now retired from the Board, Phil remains closely connected to the BHTA and continues to support the organisation’s commitment to raising standards across the industry.

Throughout his career, Phil has maintained a clear and consistent approach. He believes that lifting solutions should never be treated as an afterthought. They should be carefully specified, properly integrated, and installed to a standard that ensures long-term reliability and performance. This mindset underpins every project undertaken by Anglian Lifts and is central to the company’s continued growth and reputation.

Ethos

For clients, architects, and developers, Phil’s involvement represents more than just leadership—it represents experience, accountability, and a commitment to delivering the right solution every time.

A lift is not simply a product—it is a permanent part of a home. It must be specified with care, integrated with intent, and delivered without compromise. Phil’s experience ensures that every project meets that standard, combining engineering expertise with a clear commitment to doing things properly.
