From a bumpy standing start to the Peterborough Business Excellence Awards
Phillip Rice and Oliver Mellor started Anglian Lifts in June 2021 out of necessity after the purchase of a local company fell through. They decided to begin trading with the ‘placeholder’ company in order to safeguard 6 jobs in the local area.
After this bumpy start, and with several salaries to cover from a standing start, the company has grown quickly in its first year. The opportunity that the company is targeting is the growing demand for stairlifts and home elevators. These devices allow people to stay living in their homes longer and make life just that little bit easier for the elderly, infirm and disabled.
Each lift installation usually comes with a touching and personal story.
The Anglian Lifts team have experienced many highs and lows during the first year. One notable job was the installation of a through floor lift during the first few months of trading to help a terminally ill girl and her family ease their day to day living situation.
The family wanted to create a “Palliative paradise” but their dreams were dashed when the Disabled Facilities Grants told them “any person with a terminal diagnosis is exempt from receiving the disabilities facilities grant”.
Anglian Lifts were eventually recommended to the family and the a solution was found with the funds that had been raised. This kind of project makes the work all the more worthwhile.
Our thoughts are still with Anastasia’s family as she sadly passed away in May 2022.

Anglian Lifts – ‘Doing It Right’

The company’s ethos is ‘doing it right’.
This means doing it right for the customer and charging a fair price for a great service; doing it right for the employees by offering competitive packages, training and great work life balance; and doing it right for the local community through local support.
The team achieved a brilliant and unexpected turnover in the first year. Phil and the sales engineer, Mark, reached out to businesses, councils, and housing associations in the surrounding areas to find work to support the early launch phase of the businesses. Now the team are installing several stairlifts and through floor lifts each week and are on the lookout for more lift technicians to support the growing workload.
Meeting Customers Needs
Another reason for the team’s early success is the focus on understanding the different customer types and making sure there’s a sales approach specific to each.
Customers needing access products range from Councils needing a lift or a service for a tenant, to businesses wishing to improve their premises’ access needs and private customers wanting to make their homes more liveable. Anglian Lifts approach demand generation differently for each customer type.
The ‘doing it right’ ethos is grounded in good customer service. All the company’s processes and training are built around giving the customer an excellent product and service for a great price.

There’s never any pressured sales and the team go to great lengths to source the right products to match the needs of the customer.
